Prepping, Packing and Logistics

Lots of people have asked how we will pack for this trip. Are we taking our bikes on the boat with us? Will we be saddled with all our skiing stuff for the entire trip?

The logistics of this are a little complicated and took us a while to get our heads around.

We need to pack for skiing which, for anyone who has ever skied, requires quite a lot of stuff. And two weeks of skiing means even more stuff.

Then we need to pack for the boat. Boaty-things like goggles, floating sunglass straps and a snorkel. Then it's our bikes, helmets and lots of lycra. Packing up a bike box is not straight forward....

Since we are renting our house out while we are away (getting that ready has taken far longer - and was more stressful - than anticipated), Will's parents have very kindly agreed to keep our skiing stuff for us while we are away. The next leg of the trip is to meet Will's brother (Charlie), sister in law (Helen), and their 2 kids in Galapagos to join them on their boat. We're going via Miami to see a friend and from there we will send our bike boxes to Seattle, where we have convinced some more friends to look after them for us.

That leaves just our sailing stuff to take to Galapagos, via Guayaquil in Ecuador which is the jumping-off point to get to the islands.

When we fly to Seattle from Tahiti we will reconnect with our bikes, swap sailing stuff for bike stuff and then take everything we need for the 1500mile (2,400 km) cycle from Seattle to LA. We will then send our bike boxes, full of sailing stuff, down to LA and cycle down to meet another friend and be reunited with the boxes. The bikes will be packed back up and fly home with us the UK.

A perfect plan. What could possibly go wrong?.
